Step Tracker ("the Software") includes a Chrome extension and a native desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Both are designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not collect, store on our systems, or transmit any personal data. This policy explains what data the Software creates, where it lives, and who can access it — which is only you.
We collect no personal information of any kind. There are no user accounts, no sign-ups, no email addresses collected, and no identifiers stored or transmitted. Both the Chrome extension and the desktop app operate entirely offline on your device.
Chrome Extension: Recordings you create — including step descriptions, page URLs (if included), and screenshots — are stored exclusively in Chrome's local IndexedDB on your device. This data never leaves your browser. Recordings older than 30 days are automatically deleted from local storage.
Desktop App: Sessions are stored in localStorage on your device. Screenshots and exported files (CSV, WebM video) are saved to your local filesystem. No data is transmitted to any server or third party.
Step Tracker contains no analytics libraries, no error reporting services, no telemetry, and no usage tracking of any kind. We have no visibility into how you use the Software, what you record, or how often you use it.
When you export a session as PDF, HTML, Markdown, DOCX, ZIP, or WebM video, the entire export is generated locally on your device. In the Chrome extension, exports are built in-browser using JavaScript. In the desktop app, exports are rendered natively. No data is uploaded to any server during this process.
If you enable the password redaction option before export, screenshots of password input fields are replaced with a REDACTED_SCREENSHOT placeholder. This substitution is performed locally on your device before the export file is created. No unredacted screenshots are ever transmitted anywhere.
The Software does not communicate with any third-party services, APIs, cloud platforms, or analytics providers. There are no external network requests made by the Chrome extension or the desktop app. The desktop app's optional OS Tracker polls only a local HTTP API on your machine (127.0.0.1) and never contacts external servers.
Step Tracker is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect data from children. Because we collect no personal data from anyone, no special handling for children's data is required or performed.
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the Extension after any change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
